Design is whatever it is made into. Its importance can be life and death or what color socks you want to wear that day. Design can rule the structure of an entire billion dollar building; it can be as unobtrusive and unthought of as a free ballpoint pen. Design is what you make of it – but no matter how loud or soft design speak to you, it rules the world.

Industrial Design tends to be the driver behind any product. “Industrial Designers look for innovative and better ways to do things. They approach their work as problem solving, asking, “How do people want to travel?” rather than, “Let’s build another car.” To answer such questions, Industrial Designers explore a broad range of alternatives through drawings and models, steadily refining their designs as they test them against the user’s needs and manufacturer’s capabilities.”  

Design is necessary. Whether it be loved, loathed or ignored, design is everywhere in the built environment that is our world.  ”Design, stripped to its essence, can be defined as the human capacity to shape and make our environment in ways without precedent in nature,  to serve our needs and give meaning to our lives.” Design gives designers a meaning to what they do. Though some designs are a fluke, someone somewhere is thinking about its intentions and development. 

  “A brief outline of the historical development of designing – that is, the practice and activity of creating forms – is therefore necessary.” Design is necessary for life. Some need design to live, some need design for a place to live. Either way, design is crucial to existence.

ted made a point – about it being a “don’t ask for permission, gorilla advertising” campaign. i don’t think we had planned on the campaign being that way – we want people to take notice, but we want to be to  an actual part of the real ‘share the road’ campaign. gorilla would be cool – but i’d rather do it right. fix the kinks, then spread it, rather than spread the word and fix the kinks as they come.

should every piece of the package we’re giving to the people in this “share the road” mission tube be explicitly labeled with something that says share the road?

the mission statements…it says share the road on them. smack dab in the middle. should we mar their simplistic design appeal be sticking the ‘traditional’ “share the road” logo that we created on there somewhere? 

when is the element of cohesion too cohesive?

spray painted positive of a person. a bicyclist. a car.

one per tube. inside contents match respectively.

color coordinated as well.

spread the word. share the road.

get into it. get involved. get a life. get a bike.

take a breath. take a ride. take a walk.

see the sky. see the rain. see the world.

share the road, man. you aren’t the only one riding on it.

so even though i missed a ton, my group was awesome & came up with an idea that we’re running with. it’s like the truth anti-smoking campaign, just “share the road” instead. thinking about tshirts and street/wall graffiti (that’ll come off with water, of course).

it’s for the shock value. we want drivers, peds, & bikers to share the road. once we shock, then we’ll inform. 

i think it’ll turn out super cool.

emtha brought up a good point too. which i love. instead of doing oranges, lemons AND limes, do just oranges. since that is the name of the brand. simply orange. sure there’s simply lemonade and simply limeade. but it’s simply orange. it would be stronger a promotion for the brand if it was just oranges.

and i was thinking. for the poster ad thingy. a picture of an orange grove. a wood shelf. atop upon which would sit a wicker basket. and within would rest the “oranges”, the fruit of the orchard. or so the unsuspecting patron would assume until upon further inspection….brilliant. 

i love it. the moment was had. life is good.

now i just have to figure out how to make this juicer part. fuck.

so. maybe a picture of an orchard. the wide open spaces of the great outdoors. with lots of fruit trees. preferably oranges. maybe a wooden shelf, rustic and presh. maybe a fake tiny tree? that’s pushing it..but maybe.
